Literacy Advocacy Rap Track: “Books” by SmaBoi (ft. R. P. Gio)
Lyrics for “Books”
Track Four, S.M.A.B.O.I. LP
INTRO (SmaBoi)
Hi, thanks for coming in!
We’re the department of New Media.
I see you have a Doctorate in Communications…
but your thesis only cites Wikipedia.
I’m afraid this whole affair has us all a bit shook.
So I have a serious question for you:
Ever read a book?VERSE 1 (R. P. Gio)
Walking through a dark and scary forest yet again…
Seeing creatures as they creep, and they don’t look like friends!
Opposite adorable, and really quite deplorable,
It’s almost allegorical, for enemies now setting trendsBut I’ve got a secret weapon I’m not tryin to hide
It’s got me covered front to back and packs a solid spine
For everyone who never thought I’d ever make it out alive,
Keep on reading, see an elevation after chapter fiveYea, though I walk through the valley of darkness,
I don’t fear the evil cause it’s plain to see
48 Rules to follow, hallowed by power
I scoured for hours just to find the demon in meHoping I can find the answers deep in these pages,
Amontillado’s Cask is where I feel I belong
Melville telling secrets locked away by the ages,
So easy does it seem to follow sweet sirens’ songs.Siddhartha harkening, I’m polishing the mirror,
Spark the fire from within,
Ignite the paths to god, making it clearer
The journey of the alchemist now can beginGiving my gift to the pinnacle of my ability,
Following the way of the superior man,
Spittin the quickness with the slickest of flexibility,
Rhythmically ridiculous like I’m “Sam I Am”!Gonna walk with the walk that is measured and slow,
As I tremble on the path where the chalk arrows go,
Cause the children, they speak, and the children, they know,
To seek the Light in the Attic, and then, you follow it homeSo now, as I pray, make the most of the day,
I just flip through the chapters looking for an escape.
While I love what they do, and I love what they say,
Makes me see I don’t make it easy to turn the other pageCHORUS
Feel the ground shook, we’re unruly with the decibels
I’m bound for a book, so do we have a decimal?
Hope you ain’t illiterate, not even just a little bit,
Cuz words is what I fiddle with, ya brain’s infinitesimalYou could’ve learned real skills instead of gobbledygook…
How to cook, write a hook, be a crook, move a rook
But they put it in the last place you’d ever think to look…
Yup!
They put it in a book.BRIDGE (Zebralexis)
Ok, kids, it’s time to practice dictation.
Tell us what you read on your summer vacation.
I hope you took some time, and came to class prepared…
Mr. Boi, will you please come up front here and share?VERSE 2 (SmaBoi)
I’m really not surprised that you’re sleepin’ inside…
I’ve looked in your mind to find no reference there resides
Open up your eyes and let my people confide,
A book can shiver your spine, impart lessons, ensnare, and guideLeaf through these pages as I hand em, might seem a little random,
The prize of my now-old-youth
Teach through the sages’ turns in tandem,
The lecture of a phantom to Milo in a toy toll booth!Iliad’s an Odyssey, one helluva Homer,
Allegheri’s allegory is simply Divine
Ain’t more epic than Gilgamesh in the field of poetry,
and Tony Corinda got me readin’ ya mindAbove, you’ll look, a word that writes in spells;
We’ll read the rites of EB White,
Who spins a web so well,
See, my love for books’s as pure as life itself,
And when I think about em, I touch my shelf!Ontology recapitulates philology,
Let’s recap anthologies,
Cuz wordplay’s foreplay
Taxonomies of history’s philosophies,
We’ll babble on bout Babylon in
Libraries of Babel with BorgesUnlock the unstoppable cacophony of philosophies
You ought to be grokkin’, with the help of Bertrand Russell
Rock on, not droppin’ a syllable, knock and the lock is revealable,
Stock up on neuropil while you’re buildin’ your learnin’ muscle!Join me on Paper Street for True Hallucinations,
Make The Spirit Molecule the Wealth of the Nations,
Art of War, the War of Art, imagination,
All things come to one who is… patient.Open up the Doors of Perception,
Allow yourself a lesson,
No need for second guessin. Start!
Otherwise, I kinda have to reckon,
You’ll come up on a question,
And find out: You Are Not So SmartCHORUS
Feel the ground shook, we’re unruly with the decibels
I’m bound for a book, so do we have a decimal?
Hope you ain’t illiterate, not even just a little bit,
Cuz words is what I fiddle with, ya brain’s infinitesimalYou could’ve learned real skills instead of gobbledygook…
How to cook, write a hook, be a crook, move a rook
But they put it in the last place you’d ever think to look…
Yup!
They put it in a book.BRIDGE (2x)
Get a secret nook, new heights to reach,
Got a desperate need to get my eyes on a page.
Get my nose in a book, so much to teach,
You’d better learn to read if you wanna get paid!VERSE 3 (SmaBoi & R. P. Gio)
(Lyrics pending)

Feel the ground shook, we’re unruly with the decibels

SmaBoi is a Conscious Rap Indie Hiphop Artist from Norwalk, CT
I write various political rhymes and tracks filled with conscious rap, using superhuman syncopation to bring the station of the nation out of altercations and into illumination.
I enjoy beatboxing and live-looping human sounds, especially at music festivals. My technique blends genres, including ghetto funk, soul, rap, jazz, blues, disco, and traditional EDM / mainroom / dubstep / drum ‘n bass sounds, mixed in with my hiphop, to create a unique flavor.
If I had to sum up my genre of music in one word, it would be Tribalcore (and that’s why it’s the title of my next album, coming later this year in 2019!)
I’m taking indie rap, nerdcore hiphop, and activist music to a whole new level, and I want you to come along for the ride with me. Make sure to sign up for the mailing list while you’re here!
